Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Warriors Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a diverse cast of personalities, and a thrilling plot including celestial beings, demons, and malevolent powers increasing in strength within the city.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season follow below.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

Episode 3 ended with a major cliffhanger and introduced the premier party of heroes who will separate from the primary party to embark on their separate journey, separate from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team includes the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Considering a large ensemble, it was obvious from the start that having everyone at one table would be unworkable.

That’s why, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, weaving together the characters’ stories before dividing into three separate parties: Fighters, Strategists, and Questers.

What Defines the Combat Party

As described by the DM, the Soldiers table is for participants who prefer a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might appear out of place, but the actions of the third episode demonstrate why these five characters are perfectly fit for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

First, the group has a clear idea where to head next after a intense first encounter with the antagonists.

An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose demise started the narrative’s action—exploited the foes for his personal gain, breaking into the secret base, attacking the character, and swiping all the enchanted items to auction.

The traitor then paid off his debts and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, above the city, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each character has a personal reason to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and best friend, seeks revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in the northern area and advises that it is a dangerous location.
  • The warrior and The healer, having defied his family’s wishes to eliminate the fighter and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • But, their reputation as prominent individuals in the powerful family could enable the group access locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The fighter swore a unbreakable promise to The savior for his salvation and will now go with him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are sought by the authorities that govern the setting for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and The healer defied the powerful family and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This results in them little choice but to head to the remote area in quest for the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

From episode three’s Cooldown, we learn that the combat party won’t be around the following episode, leaving the remaining eight participants to round up the Seekers and Planners tables.

Fans can anticipate discovering which characters will be in which group in the season’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on next week.
