Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
