Uche Ignites Comfortable Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Missing star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel MuƱoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight passage to the last 16, especially after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for several Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their domestic season were outmatched against a largely rotated Palace outfit. The Londoners were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and MuƱoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Control Established from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
