On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an bold commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
